Eagles in your Home: Connecting with Wildlife through Remote Cameras

Free Conservation Talk at Sequoia Park Zoo

Join us on Wednesday, January 15 at 7 p.m. as local wildlife biologists
Sandra Hunt-von Arb and Jim Campbell-Spickler share their experience in
helping to make the Humboldt Bay Eagles nestcam a reality at Sequoia Park
Zoo's January conservation lecture. They'll also discuss their vision for
educational outreach and citizen science opportunities presented by remote
technologies like the nestcam and the widespread availability of
Internet-enabled devices like tablets and smartphones.

For much of 2013, millions of Bald eagle fans around the world were glued to
the Humboldt Bay Eagle Cam - made possible by a grant from the Sequoia Park
Zoo Conservation Fund. The parent eagles have made their home in Humboldt
Bay since 2006 and the famous pair has just returned to their territory to
start courtship and nest restoration in preparation for their ninth year on
the Bay.

Jim Campbell-Spickler is the chief biologist for Eco-Ascension Research and
Consulting, and serves as a forest canopy ecologist with the Redwood Climate
Change Initiative (RCCI) studying the implications of climate change for
old-growth coast redwood and giant sequoia forests in California. He has
worked with the Institute for Wildlife Studies since 2000, specializing in
tree and cliff nest access and handling of eaglets during work related to
the reintroduction of the bald eagle to the Channel Islands, California.

Sandra Hunt-von Arb is the Senior Wildlife Biologist for Pacific North
Western Biological. She conducts biological assessments and surveys of
forest raptors including Spotted owls, eagles, and hawks as they relate to
forestry practices. She received the 2008 Professional of the Year award
from the California North Coast Chapter of The Wildlife Society (CNCCTWS),
promoting wildlife science and education for both current and future
wildlife professionals. The talk will take place in the Zoo's classroom in
the Secrets of the Forest building at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, and a
reception will be held half an hour beforehand. There is no charge to
attend, and both Zoo members and non-members are invited.
